Every family has a story and Lent begins by retelling our family story as human beings made in the image of God. Lent reminds us who we are. And it reminds us who we are meant to be.
The very first time we turned from God, Eve, our ancient mother, took and ate the fruit of a tree. When she ate of the tree and gave it to her husband, Adam, and he ate, for the very first time they knew evil. Up to that point they had only known goodness. And they were suddenly afraid of their only friend - of the God who had made them and given them everything.
Lent takes us on a journey to the cross, where all things are made new. Even the action of taking and eating are transformed by Christ. At first, Eve took and ate fruit that brought her, and the rest of us, death. But now Christ invites us all to take and eat a different fruit from a different tree - his own body and blood. And this time the fruit that we take and eat will being life rather than death.
